Top gangster, 2 others killed in encounter with Delhi Police

A top gangster, who carried a cash reward of Rs one lakh and wanted in over 50 cases of murder, extortion and kidnapping, was Friday night killed along with two of his accomplices in an encounter with Delhi Police near a posh hotel here.

Acting on a tip-off, Delhi Police special cell laid a trap near Hotel Grand Hyatt in Vasant Kunj at around 10:30 pm when Surendra Malik, alias Neetu Dabodia, along with two of his associates came in a car there.

When police intercepted them and asked them to surrender, they allegedly rammed their car into the police vehicle and opened fire at them, S N Srivasatava, Special Commissioner, Special Cell, said.

In retaliation, police fired at them injuring all the three who were taken to AIIMS Trauma Care Centre where they were declared brought dead.

Malik was allegedly involved in the killing of Delhi police head constable Ram Kishan in December last year.

While one of Malik's associate was identified as Alok Gupta, the identity of the third one is yet to be established, Srivasatava said.

Gunbattle between Army, infiltrators enters 13th day

The army operation against the holed up militants in Keran Sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir entered the 13th day on Sunday with intermittent gunfire being exchanged.

"The operation is still in progress. No fresh casualties have been reported on either side so far," defence sources said.

Intermittent firing between the group of holed up infiltrating militants and the Army continued as security forces maintained a tight vigil over the cordoned off area, they said.

The Army launched a massive anti-infiltration operation in Shalbhatti village in Keran Sector on September 24 after noticing a group of 30 to 40 militants trying to sneak into the Valley.
The operation is going on in a vast area along the LoC and so far seven militants have been killed -- three in Gujjardoor village on Friday and four in Fateh Gali area of the sector yesterday.

Earlier, the Army had said 10-12 militants were believed to have been killed in Shalbhatti village but the bodies could not be retrieved as the operation against the remaining militants was in progress.

Five soldiers have been injured in gunbattle.

The Army has termed as "absurd" the reports about capture of some posts by the infiltrators, saying the troops are in total control of the operation.

"We are in total control of the operation. The reports of our posts being captured by the infiltrators are absurd," General Officer Commanding of the Army's 15 Corps Lt General Gurmit Singh has said.

A top guerrilla commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen involved in killings of two policemen and a civilian besides carrying out other terror attacks in the Kashmir Valley has been arrested, a police officer said Saturday.

Deputy Inspector General (North Kashmir range) J.P. Singh told reporters in north Kashmir's Sopore town that a top HM commander identified as Ghulam Mohiuddin Dar, resident of Sopore, was arrested in a joint operation by the local police, counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) thereby busting a module of HM in Sopore area.

Dar was operating in tandem with the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit and had killed two policemen and a civilian besides carrying out an attack at a liquor shop in Srinagar.

The DIG confirmed that on the revelations made by the arrested HM commander, some other militants in the HM module had also been arrested.

No end to Army operation in Keran, gunbattle enters 13th day

Thirteen days since the operation in Keran started, the gunfight between the Army and the terrorists is still on. The Army is battling 30 to 40 terrorists who had infiltrated in the Keran sector. This even as Army Chief General Bikram Singh said the Keran intrusion is in no way comparable to Kargil and described it as an infiltration attempt.

"There is no Kargil-like situation in Keran sector of Kashmir. No village has been occupied by terrorists. We will get them out soon. It is a matter of time," General Bikram Singh had said. There have been several infiltration bids that have been taking place along the Line of Control. Indian forces have been battling around 30 to 40 terrorists who infiltrated the region 13 days ago. The Army had on Saturday foiled an infiltration bid in close vicinity to the ongoing Keran operation after a 2-hour gunbattle with the terrorists.

Four terrorists had been killed in the incident and six AK 47 rifles, 4 pistols and other warlike ammunitions were recovered from the terrorists. An infiltration bid was also foiled in Gujjardur area near Shallabattu in Jammu. Two infiltrators had been killed in the incident. Another ceasefire violation on international border in Hiranagar area of Samba sector had also taken place on Thursday where the Pakistan rangers targeted the Pahadpur post of BSF.

The BSF fired in retaliation and foiled the infiltration bid. In Poonch too, the Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian posts at around 6:30 pm on Thursday. Indian troops guarding the border retaliated with the same calibre weaponry, which had resulted in a 20 minute gunbattle.

'Mass Panic': Car chase from White House to Capitol ends with suspect dead

A chaotic car chase that began when a woman tried to ram a security barrier near the White House ended with the suspect being fatally shot near the U.S. Capitol, in an incident that put the Hill temporarily on lockdown and caused what one witness described as "mass panic."

Police confirmed late Thursday that the suspect was killed after being struck by officers' gunfire. The Secret Service said she had a 1-year-old girl in the car, who was not injured.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said officers acted "heroically." She said two officers were injured -- one from the U.S. Capitol Police, the other from Secret Service -- but "both will be okay."

The USCP officer was released from MedStar Washington Hospital Center Thursday night.

Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told Fox News that the woman originally tried to run down a Secret Service agent near the White House. The Secret Service later confirmed the officer was struck by the woman's car.

In a statement, it also said multiple gunshots were later fired at two locations near the Capitol.

According to U.S. Capitol Police, its officer was injured in a related car crash.

The chase and subsequent stand-off near the Capitol went down as lawmakers were debating under the dome about the partial government shutdown. Officials said it appears the incident had "no nexus to terrorism."

Terrance Gainer, the Senate sergeant at arms, told Fox News that this appears to be an "isolated incident."Gainer also said the injured Capitol Police officer crashed a police cruiser while trying to join the chase. The cruiser "seriously clipped" a barricade, he said, but the injuries are "not life threatening."

The chase and stand-off caused panic on Capitol Hill, with sirens blaring inside the building and lawmakers and their staff being ordered to stay in place. The lockdown was later lifted. Returning to the floor late Thursday afternoon, lawmakers thanked Capitol Police and other security officers and gave them a standing ovation.

Officials said the incident began with a car chase, which started when the suspect, driving a black sedan with Connecticut plates, tried to ram a barrier near the White House.

Several police cars pursued her to a location near the Capitol building. When they boxed her in, sources said, the driver got out and five or six shots were fired.

David Loewenberg, who witnessed the incident, said he saw an officer "hugging a child and taking that child away."

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene.

"We were definitely caught off guard, we were scared," said Matt Knuppeo, who said he was touring the Capitol building when the stand-off unfolded. "It was mass panic for a while."

"We just heard the gun shots -- pow pow pow pow," witness Emily Wheeler told Fox News.

The developments come as lawmakers were debating a series of small spending bills, amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The violence follows the mass shooting last month at the Washington Navy Yard, where a gunman killed 12 people. The gunman also died.

Eight policemen injured in Srinagar gunfight

A senior police officer said eight policemen including an assistant sub-inspector were injured in the exchange of fire between a guerrilla and the security forces in Ahmad Nagar area, 10 kilometres from city centre Lal Chowk.

Eight policemen were injured in the nightlong gunfight between a holed up guerrilla and the security forces in outskirts of Srinagar Thursday.

A senior police officer said eight policemen including an assistant sub-inspector were injured in the exchange of fire between a guerrilla and the security forces in Ahmad Nagar area, 10 kilometres from city centre Lal Chowk.

"The holed up militant lobbed grenades and fired from an automatic rifle at the police after we zeroed on him in a residential house in Ahmad Nagar and challenged him to surrender," a senior police officer told IANS.

Police had a tough time ensuring that no civilian in the residential area gets injured because of the exchange of gunfire.

All the civilians from the house in which the guerrilla had taken shelter and adjoining houses were safely evacuated before the operation against the guerrilla was launched, the senior police officer said.

Intermittent firing exchanges continued during the night, but since morning no gunshots were heard in the area.

"We are searching the area right now", the officer said.
