NEW DELHI: While assuring citizens a regular water supply, better roads and women's safety, the Aam Aadmi Party candidates are also promising not to be your typical neta. During their door-to-door campaigns, candidates are handing out copies of affidavits they have submitted to the party saying they will not use "lal batti ki gadi", live in government accommodation or take police protection.
"All candidates gave this affidavit to the party after being nominated. Now, a copy of this is being distributed to each home in every constituency. Because these are attested documents, the public can take us to task if we fail to abide with our promises. We wanted to reassure the public that AAP is different from other political parties and we will not take advantage of our position," AAP candidate from Bijwasan Col Devinder Sehrawat said.
The affidavit says candidates will also consult the public for all decision making till the time it becomes possible to have a government by the people.
"It has already happened in Dallupura constituency where the municipal councillor, who is the AAP candidate from Laxmi Nagar, has held regular meetings with the people, asking them what works they want carried out and what problems they might be facing. We want to replicate this in all constituencies," said a party source.
Other promises include having the Jan Lokpal Bill and electoral reforms passed as soon as possible and bringing a law that will prevent he government from acquiring land without consent of the owner.
The pledge is being distributed along with a pamphlet that has a list of frequently asked questions about the party, a brief agenda and information about respective candidates.
"The plan is to distribute these in all homes of every constituency. This is being done alongside manifesto meetings because the candidate will be accountable to the public on both counts-this pledge and manifesto," said the source.
