உங்கள் அக்கவுண்ட்டினை முழுமையாக நீக்க எண்ணினால், உங்கள் அக்கவுண்ட் பிரிவில் Account Management என்பதில் உள்ள ‘Close account and delete all services and information associated with it' என்ற லிங்க்கில் கிளிக் செய்திடவும். மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை ‘Yes, I want to delete my account' என்ற பட்டனில் கிளிக் செய்திட வேண்டியதிருக்கும்.

In the second such procedure in India, 6 kidneys to be swapped in a 'domino' transplant

Three months after the country’s first ever ‘domino’ kidney transplant involving five patients and an equal number of donors was performed, the second such attempt will be made across three city hospitals in the first week of December. This time around, it will involve six kidney patients and six donors.

A domino transplant is a series of surgeries in which each of the donors (six in this case) gives an organ to an unrelated recipient. Each donor’s relative needing a kidney gets it from the relative of one of the six recipients. Legal issues are involved in organ donation cases when the donor and recipient are not related.

After facing many hurdles to get permission from the state government, the country’s first-ever domino kidney transplant was performed in the city in June this year. It was first reported indna.

Like the first domino transplant, the second one will be conducted at Bombay Hospital (three procedures), Hiranandani Hospital (two procedures) and Hinduja (one procedure). All transplants will be performed on the same day. The date is still to be finalised.

Dr Shrirang Bicchu, nephrologist, Bombay hospital and co-ordinator of the forthcoming domino transplant, said, “The success of the earlier procedure has now set a precedent and will encourage people to opt for it as it reduces a patient’s wait for the organ. We are thankful to the state government for speeding up the procedure. We are now in the midst of completing the legal documentation and will submit the same to the state authorisation committee. If the domino method were not available, the patients would have had to wait for at least 10 years.

For a transplant, the blood and tissue of a donor and recipient must match. In the case of one of the recipients, Mahesh Kadam, his father was ready to donate a kidney but there was a mismatch in blood group. Mahesh had ‘O’ group, his father’s was ‘A’. Doctors advised Mahesh to register with the Apex Swap Transplant Registry (ASTRA) which addresses the issue of mismatch in blood groups or tissue among those who come for transplant.

ASTRA then identified those who have been suffering from kidney problems and could be lined up in a domino transplant procedure. Those approached included Dombivli resident Sushma Sawant who has kidney ailments, and is on dialysis. Her husband, Laxman, could have donated his kidney to her but they agreed to a domino transplant to help save five more lives.

“We came to know that not one but five lives could be saved by domino procedure and we decided to exchange kidneys by mutual agreement,” said Laxman Sawant.

How it works
For a transplant, it is necessary that blood and tissue of a donor and recipient match.

When they don’t, the domino procedure is resorted to. In this procedure, the donor of one pair donates the kidney to the recipient of another pair. The transplant is then carried out in a series, till the last donor in the chain donates to the first recipient in the line-up.

Certain type of fat could help you lose weight

A diet high in a certain type of fat may actually boost metabolism and help you shed flab, according to new research.

After studying genetically modified mice, the discovery by Texas Tech University nutrition scientists could lead to supplements and a diet regime that will increase metabolism and decrease muscle fatigue in humans.

Researcher Chad Paton and colleagues were curious why skeletal muscles of obese people contained a certain type of enzyme that breaks down saturated fats.

To test what that enzyme did, Paton's lab and colleagues from the University of Wisconsin - Madison genetically modified mice so that their muscles would constantly produce the enzyme.

"We used a transgenic mouse model, and we took the gene that makes the enzyme that's not normally expressed and took away it's regulation to make it active all the time," Paton said.

"What we found in those animals is they had a hypermetabolic rate compared to the wild mice, increased energy consumption and greatly increased these animals' exercise capacity, said Paton.

The enzyme, called SCD1, converts saturated fat into monounsaturated fat, which is easier to metabolise. The liver will produce this enzyme depending on the fat content of the food consumed, he said.

Fatty adipose tissue produces it all the time as a way of regulating itself.

Only in heavily exercised muscle tissue or in the case of obesity does skeletal muscle produce the enzyme, he said.

After looking at skeletal muscles of the genetically modified mice compared to that of the wild mice, Paton and his team discovered higher levels of polyunsaturated fats, particularly linoleic acid, gotten only through diet.

Higher levels of linoleic acid could only mean one thing - the modified mice were eating more food. But Paton's team found that the modified mice weighed less than the wild mice. On top of that, their ability to exercise increased.

"We found in the genetically modified animals that they had a hypermetabolic rate," he said.

"They were increasing their energy consumption, and they experienced greatly increased exercise capacity. For example, on the exercise wheels, normal mice fatigue after 7 to 10 minutes.

The study was published in the The Journal of Lipid Research.

Apollo Advanced Fever Clinic: Time to tackle recurring fever

It never is ‘just a fever’. An elevated body temperature is a response the body sends out that all is not well. A fever is an indication that there is an infection in the body or an abnormality that needs to be investigated. Good for you if the body sorts it out all by itself after a few mild medications. But if the fever is prolonged, unrelenting, or recurring, clearly it must be investigated.

Since fever can be so common, one hardly thinks of establishing a dedicated, 24-hour, super specialty clinic for it. Usually, fever clinics are set up as a public health response, in order to catch all cases during an epidemic, for instance, of dengue or malaria.

The Tamil Nadu health department, for instance, establishes fever wards in all government hospitals as a response to a seasonal flu or virus.

About 416 mobile medical units conduct camps on a daily basis in various parts of the State, and minor ailments including fever are attended to. Those with fever can also report to the outpatient units in the government hospitals, according to officials from the Public Health department.

But it is the kind of fever whose causes baffle the patient and the doctor that are important, especially because what starts as a fever, if untreated over a period of time, can even be fatal for the patient. It is to tackle these cases, fever of unknown origin, as they are called that Apollo First Med Hospitals has launched an Advanced Fever Clinic.

The brain behind the show, T.V.Devarajan, senior consultant physician says, the time was ripe for opening a clinic. “We have been working on this over a few years now. In the last five years, we have observed many patients coming in with fever, where the causes are undiagnosed, and therefore lead on to several complications. This clinic will not see normal fever cases, only those that require special investigation.

Cases that have puzzled other doctors, or patients (with fever) whose results continue to indicate no apparent abnormality, or simply those with prolonged high fever are the right candidates. “We have seen about five cases of scrub typhus, a relatively rare condition in urban areas. The clue we had was that these people had all been trekking in the wild or had been in forest areas (where the disease-causing mite lives) recently. They all came undiagnosed, and had that situation continued they would have died,” Dr. Devarajan explains.

“Unless diagnosis is done at the right time, a whole bunch of complications can ensue,” adds Preetha Reddy, MD, Apollo Hospitals. Also, it is essential for a multi-disciplinary team to be available on call in order to do a thorough investigation that will reveal the real cause of the fever, she says.

“You cannot really call a fever ‘ordinary’. Some thing as simple as malaria can cause lung injury and turn out to be fatal,” says R.Sathyabhama, Director of Medical Services, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.

Yash Chopra showcased women's fashion through his films

Churidar-kurtas were not the only must-haves created by Chopra's films. Decades later in the eighties, chiffon sarees acquired an elevated fashion status courtesy his portrayal of statuesque heroines draped sensuously, making their way through Switzerland or Holland and turning heads everywhere.

It seems almost a lifetime since we last saw the eponymous film-maker Yash Chopra at his birthday last year, so when his wife, Mrs Pam Chopra's invitation for celebrating his birthday almost a year after his unfortunate death came along, RSVPing for the said event was almost a no-brainer. The idea of celebrating Chopra through the prism of his most beautiful creations — his leading ladies walking the ramp in a clothesline inspired by his films seemed most apt.

I recall yesteryear star Sadhana Nayyar, who impressed everyone with her stylish figure hugging churidar-kurtis in Waqt, mentioning (during one of our conversations) how particular Yashji, as he was referred to, was about the attire his heroines were sporting. For Chopra, clothes indeed maketh the woman, though he was hardly crazy about brands. His fashion logic was simple and unerring — the heroine had to be presented in a way that she always looked breathtaking.

In fact, in her book the Art of Costume Design, costume designer Bhanu Rajopadhye Athaiya makes a special mention, "Yash Chopra and Sadhana both inspired me to do my best. Earlier Punjabi-style long kurtas with three-quarter sleeves and broad salwar was the ruling fashion. In Waqt, we introduced thechuridar-pyjama and sleeveless fitting kurtas with a side band that brought complete attention to the body form. Sadhana and I created an outfit and she modelled it for Yash Chopra when he came over to discuss the wardrobe. He was completely bowled over and gave his green signal at once. The film became a sensation on its release and according to Yashji, girls in Delhi bought movie tickets for their tailors, so that they could replicate them!"

Juhi Chawla, who was among the string of actresses that he directed in his films, recalled that during the filming of a scene which required her being ill, Chopra insisted on the dark circles created by the make-up man around her eyes to be lightened. No matter what the circumstances, his heroines had to look luminous.

Predictably enough, being a Yash Chopra heroine was a coveted badge of honour every actress was vying for. Among those who got a chance to wear it, the southern sirens — Madam Re and Sridevi took the Yashraj leading lady's style quotient to iconic levels.

That in time to come, Yashraj Films gave us the first official size zero heroine —Kareena Kapoor, besides Aishwarya Rai in a sizzling avatar in Dhoom 2 and a host of other actresses sartorially revamped and reinvented was an obvious and a befitting progression.

Over time Hindi cinema has become far more glamorous with a significant budget attached to dressing up the actors, but few can lay claim to creating the fashion frenzy created by a Yash Chopra film. A rather interesting aspect of his impact is that in interweaving the weft and warp of Indian and western trends, all in the service of beauty, he created a sartorial sensibility uniquely Indian.

Incidentally, Yash Chopra also gave us the unforgettable Angry Young Man aka Amitabh Bachchan and the incurable romantic in Shah Rukh Khan with a few rather stylish flourishes, but I will hold that thought for another day.

NASA findings won’t affect Mars mission, say ISRO officials

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists denied Thursday findings relayed by NASA rover Curiosity on September 19, that there is no trace of methane on the surface of Mars, have undermined Mangalyaan Mission or Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM).

The first ISRO mission outside the gravitational field of the Earth, scheduled for launch on October 28, is also set to look for methane, a possible sign of life having existed on the red planet.

"The main MOM objective is to be a technology demonstrator for interplanetary missions, to demonstrate that we can travel to outer space and insert a spacecraft into the Mars orbit,'' said Deviprasad Karnik, director of public relations at ISRO.

S K Shivakumar, director of the ISRO Satellite Centre who shipped the spacecraft to Sriharikota Thursday, said MOM findings from a distance could support Curiosity findings or provide evidence of a portion of Mars not explored by Curiosity.

ISRO has, meanwhile, altered science objectives of the mission to study "Mars surface features, morphology, mineralogy and Martian atmosphere by indigenous scientific instruments".

It hit the final lap of the Rs 450-crore mission Thursday, with the spacecraft dispatched from Bangalore Wednesday reaching Sriharikota signalling the next phase — integration of the orbiter with its launch vehicle, the ISRO workhorse PSLV-C25.

The spacecraft and the launch vehicle will undergo a series of checks before the integration by October 10.

"We have now entered the 24/7 work mode. All stations will be in constant work mode. What has been a fairly big and national effort will now narrow down to a core team effort. There may be 40-50 scientists involved in the phase to the countdown,'' said Shivakumar.

"Though spacecraft launches on the PSLV are routine for ISRO, there is anxiety about the Mars mission because it is new. We have not ventured outside the influence of the Earth," Karnik said.

Over the next few days, ISRO will also undertake fuelling of the launch vehicle. The mission will require some 852 kg of rocket fuel, 40 kg more than Chandrayaan 1, to take the orbiter on its 299-day, 400-million-km journey to the Mars orbit.

The spacecraft will rotate around the Earth orbit for a month before launching to the Mars orbit on November 30. It will be injected into Mars orbit on September 21, 2014.

ISRO officials said the weight of the spacecraft and its payload of five scientific instruments had been kept 1,343 kg because the PSLV can carry only around 1,600 kg.

"With a lower mass, we can achieve a higher apogee (furthest distance from Mars). It is not a compromise,'' Shivakumar said.

Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair, however, said the PSLV restricts the scope of the mission, the 52nd such in the world. A mission using the under-development heavy lift GSLV (geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle) would have taken the orbiter closer to Mars with more instruments, he said.

"We cannot get anywhere near a circular orbit of Mars on this mission. For any remote-sensing application to be accurate and meaningful, it has to be a circular orbit. In this case, the closest distance between the spacecraft and Mars is expected to be around 350 km and the farthest 80,000 km.

"No meaningful experimentation can be done,'' the former ISRO chairman said.

Large ‘hot’ cocoon around small baby star discovered

Scientists using ALMA have discovered a very large hot molecular cloud around a very young star

This hot cloud is about ten times larger than those found around typical solar-mass baby stars, which indicates that the star formation process has more diversity than ever thought.

Stars are formed in very cold (-260 degrees Celsius) gas and dust clouds.

Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are dense regions of such clouds, and thought that in which clusters of stars are formed. Since most of stars are born as members of star clusters, investigating IRDCs has a crucial role in a comprehensive understanding of the star formation process.

A baby star is surrounded by the natal gas and dust cloud, and the cloud is warmed up from its center. Temperature of the central part of some, but not all, of such clouds reaches as high as -160 degrees Celsius.

Inside hot cores, various molecules, originally trapped in the ice mantle around dust particles, are sublimated. Organic molecules such as methanol (CH3OH), ethyl cyanide (CH3CH2CN), and methyl formate (HCOOCH3) are abundant in hot cores.

International research team, led by Takeshi Sakai at the University of Electro-Communication, Japan, used ALMA to observe an IRDC named G34.43+00.24 MM3 (hereafter MM3) in the constellation Aquila (the Eagle).

They discovered a young object from which the methanol molecular line is strongly emitted. A detailed investigation tells them that the temperature of the methanol gas is -140 degrees Celsius.

This shows that MM3 harbours a baby star surrounded by a hot core.

The size of the hot core is as large as 800 by 300 astronomical units (1 au equals the mean distance from the Sun to the Earth, about 150 million km). Typical size of hot cores around low-mass young stars is several tens to a hundred AU, therefore the hot core in MM3 is exceptionally large.

This result has been published in Astrophysical Journal Letters. (ANI)

Bowling plan against MS Dhoni worked, says Pravin Tambe

Legspinner Pravin Tambe, who played a big role in Rajasthan Royals' 14-run win over Chennai Super Kings in Champions Trophy Twenty20 semi-finals, said that he stuck to the basics and kept on attacking without trying anything special.

"I was not thinking about anything special. I just wanted to keep it simple and attack stump to stump," said Tambe who was adjudged man-of-the-match for his three for 10 in four overs to jolt CSK. He said his side wanted to keep a step ahead of CSK and that helped them win the semifinal clash. "I troubled Dhoni a bit because I was able to land on the line I wanted to," Tambe said. (BCCI Images) "I don't think they (CSK) were under pressure.

They are a champion team but we had planned to keep a step ahead of them. That is we were attacking right from beginning and that paid," said Tambe, who is now the highest wicket-taker in this CLT20 edition with 10 scalps in his kitty, last night. Talking about Ajinkya Rahane's fine 70-run innings, Tambe said, "It was a fine effort by Rahane but we think more of our performance as a team. Royals always play a team and that has been our strength."

Asked what was the mood at the RR dressing room at the break when they were restricted to 159, much below their expectation Tambe said that his team was still confident. "We knew it was a big match and 160 run target in semifinal clash was not a bad score. There is always a pressure when chasing," said the seasoned leg-spinner who turns 42 on Tuesday.

Asked if he had bowled to a plan to CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Tambe said, "I troubled him a bit because I was able to land on the line I wanted to." He said he was "not worried about playing the final at Delhi as the team has self belief and can succeed in all conditions".

Star, ESPN bag BCCI sponsorship rights at base price

With just one bidder in fray, the BCCIawarded the title sponsorship for all domestic and international tournaments in India for the year 2013-14 to Star Private Ltd. and ESPN Software at the base price of Rs two crore per fixture, almost Rs 1.5 crore less than the previous deal with Airtel.

The new deal was inked at the BCCI's marketing committee meeting on Thursday and board secretary Sanjay Patel said they were not disappointed with the reduced price considering the "turmoil in the financial market".

"The marketing committee has awarded the title sponsorship rights for all series to be played in India in the 2013-14 season to Star India Pvt. Ltd and ESPN Software India Pvt. Ltd, at a fee of Rs 2 crore per international match," Patel said.

There are two international series scheduled during the period between October, 2013 and March, 2014 -- the seven-match ODI series and a T20 game between India and Australia, followed by two Tests and three ODIs against the West Indies.

"The market situation is such that at one point of time we thought it will be very difficult to get the sponsorship considering the turmoil in the financial market. But we are very happy (with price)," Patel told reporters after the meeting on Thursday.

"We are pleased that Star and ESPN Group bid for both the series. That means Australia and West Indies (series) and the deal will be close to Rs 26 crore. Only one bid was there and the minimum bidding price (is what) they have accepted.

"But we are happy they have included the Australia series also though it is starting within two or three days. Under the market situation, we are happy the deal has gone through and the entire series is covered," he said.

Patel dismissed suggestions that the recent spot-fixing controversies surrounding the board's cash-rich IPL had marred its prospects in selling the rights at a better price.

"I don't think negative news has got anything to do with these kinds of things. Cricket is going on well. Our teams are doing good. It is not attributed to any image (of the Board). According to us there is no question of a bad image."

Asked if the board had decided to include the home series against West Indies to make up for the revenue, the BCCI secretary said the idea was to please the fans by pencilling in more matches in India.

"There were a couple of reasons because BCCI is also committed to its local fans. Somehow, for the season 2013-14, only 24 days, if I am not wrong, was the home series (duration of Australia tour including non-match days). So obviously we were worried, and we are quite happy that West Indies series has been finalised."

Patel said considering the economic downturn, the BCCI has managed to get a decent deal.

"The deal is always market driven. One has to be happy with the market situation. Rather than concentrating on less or more price, we should concentrate on what you are getting as per the market situation. We are quite happy that as per the market situation, the price is not bad," he asserted.

Sponsorship rights will extend to domestic events such as Irani Cup, Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare, Deodhar Trophy and Raj Singh Dungarpur Trophy.

The new deal comes after Airtel's partnership with the BCCI ended this year.

The telecom giant had won the sponsorship rights in 2010 for all international and domestic matches scheduled in India.

The three-year contract, running from September 1, 2010 to March 31, 2013, was worth Rs 3.33 crore for each international fixture. Airtel was also allowed branding on stumps and fixed slots for in-stadium advertising as part of the deal.

There was a three-month window for Airtel to negotiate an extension of the contract, but with no further discussion on the matter, the BCCI's marketing committee floated fresh tender document last month.

Cowell, Walsh have murdered music: Sinead O'Connor

Irish singer Sinead O'Connor has held music mogul Simon Cowell and music reality show judge Louis Walsh responsible for "murdering music".

O'Connor appeared on "The Late Show" Friday to address an ongoing feud with young singer Miley Cyrus, but instead she targeted Cowell and his flagship show "The X Factor". She blamed him and many others for the death of rock 'n' roll music, reports contactmusic.com.

"I don't feel sorry for me or for anybody else in the matter, that's not what it's about. The broader issue, I feel sorry for the murder of music. I feel sorry for the murder of rock 'n' roll which has happened because of the industry. Because of Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and the lot of them (talent show judges) have murdered music," O'Connor said on the Irish chat show:

"They're murderers of music! I stand and say it on behalf of every musician in the world and they will all agree with it. I don't give a s**t if I hurt them.

"All the sexualisation of young people, all the worship of bling and money and diamonds and 'Pop Idol' stuff, Simon Cowell - it all amounts to the murder of music," she added.

Earlier this week, O'Connor had penned an open letter to Cyrus warning her of the dangers of the music industry and asking her to stop projecting an overtly sexual image.

Cyrus, 20, responded to the letter via Twitter. She mocked bipolar disease sufferer O'Connor for her mental health issues.

I wouldn't even enter a theatre to watch 'Grand Masti': Zoya Akhtar

Director Zoya Akhtar is critical of the recently released adult comedy 'Grand Masti' and says that it is the kind of film she would never give her money to. "'Grand Masti'... I wouldn't even enter (a theatre) to watch it. I have seen the promo and I know that it is not for me.

It is appalling, it will make me very irritable and there is no way I am going to give money to this film," the 40-year-old said here Friday. Starring Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani and Riteish Deshmukh, 'Grand Masti' has also entered the Rs 100 crore club. The film faced a lot of flak for its overtly sexual and explicit content.

Zoya says she has no issues with a bad film which makes money. But she feels awful when good films fail. Zoya says she has no issues with a bad film which makes money. But she feels awful when good films fail to get enough business. "I feel sad when good films don't make money. When bad films make money, I am like 'something had to come out of it, he has no talent so he might as well make some cash'.

But a good filmmaker should make money," she said at the launch of film critic Anupama Chopra's book '100 Films To See Before You Die'. Asked which film she feels could have made more money, Zoya said, 'Udaan'. "It could have made a lot more money. My own film 'Luck By Chance' could have done a lot better," she added.

Meet the voice of Apple's Siri

Siri, whose voice do you have?

The question has intrigued millions of AppleiPhone and iPad fans, who use the devices' voice-activated personal assistant for help with everything from finding restaurants and directions to organizing their day.

On Friday, CNN reported it has discovered the original voice. The person had never before been identified publicly.

The network named Susan Bennett, a voice-over actress from Atlanta, as the voice behind Siri, which was first introduced on Apple's iPhone 4Sin 2011.

"I'm the voice actor who provided the voice of Siri," Bennett told CNN in an interview.

Trudi Muller, a spokeswoman for Apple, declined to comment on the CNN report. Bennett could not be immediately reached for comment.

CNN said an audio-forensics expert "has studied both voices and says he is '100 percent' certain the two are the same."

Bennett told the network she worked four hours a day for the entire month of July 2005 recording segments in her home recording booth. She said she was paid by the hour but would not reveal the amount.

"A colleague e-mailed me (about Siri) and said, 'Hey, we've been playing around with this new Apple phone. Isn't this you?'" Bennett told CNN.

Her voice may also be familiar to airline passengers who have passed through a Delta Airlines terminal.

The CNN reporter who helped identify Bennett as the voice of Siri met her while researching a story about voices at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world's busiest.

Bennett also provided the radio and TV voice of First National Bank's "Tillie the All-Time Teller," the first ATM machine, she told CNN.

"I began my career as a machine many years ago," Bennett told the network. "I'm sure that you hear my voice at some point every day."

Facebook asks if you 'really' like it

In a first-ever self examination survey, Facebook will be gauging its users’ attitudes towards the site, and how the attitudes evolve over time.

The social media giant has formed its first ‘feedback panel’, where people will be surveyed for six months to check their level of satisfactions with the site and why they change.

According to Huffington Post, the site will be analyzing how users respond to ads and stories in their News Feed in a bid to learn which ads make its members happiest.

Facebook’s product manager for ads in News Feed, Fidji Simo said that the site wants to understand how users feel about ads, so that as the company grows its business, it is able to maintain the right balance between the advertisers’ needs and the users’ experience.

The site will be inviting certain members of its community and the participants will also be asked if they observe variation in the quality and quantity of ads delivered to them, and how they predict their Facebook usage might change in the future.

As Facebookers are the most irritated by ads, according to the ACSI 2013 survey; developer of the feedback panel and a user experience researcher at Facebook, Judd Antin explained that the real purpose of the survey is to connect changes in attitudes over time to the experience which might be driving those changes.

The report said that the first feedback panel will be limited to English-speaking users in the US, though it will include a cross-section of people who are representative of Facebook’s US population as a whole.

What Can Be Sold in 140 Characters? That’s Now the Challenge for Twitter

So get ready, Twitter users: you are going to see more ads in your message stream, especially if you live overseas.

You may also see Twitter become more like a flash-sale site, with offers to buy products appearing in your message stream along with a way to buy them with a quick click or tweet.

In documents filed on Thursday to inform investors ahead of its initial public offering of stock, Twitter noted that it has been greatly expanding its inventory of advertising slots, especially for promoted tweets, which are sponsored messages that use the same format as the 140-character postings, or tweets, that are the core of the service.

The company, based in San Francisco, said that across its base of 218 million users, the average person is checking the service more frequently — about 230 times a month, compared with 197 times a month a year ago. And users are also interacting with more ads.

But Twitter revealed that it has also significantly increased the number of ads it sells, and prices for those ads have fallen. The company said it believes cheaper, more targeted ads will draw in more advertising, more than making up for the price drop.

So far, the strategy seems to be working — the company said advertising revenue more than doubled in the first six months of this year, to $221 million, compared with the same period last year.

Joy Baer, executive vice president of Strata, which makes software that helps advertisers and ad agencies buy online ads, said that the 1,000 ad agencies that use Strata had been rapidly increasing their purchases of Twitter ads over the last two years. Although Facebook still dwarfs Twitter in overall revenue, she said that for every $100 in Facebook ads her customers buy, they are buying $33 of Twitter ads.

“There is a huge opportunity for them to get more of the dollars,” Ms. Baer said. “What they have to do is make it easier for a media buyer to click a button and buy Twitter.”

Right now, the company’s ad-buying process is less automated than for competitors like Facebook and Google.

Twitter declined to comment, citing regulations limiting what a company selling stock to investors could say beyond its official filings.

But analysts say that Twitter faces several growth challenges.

More than three-quarters of the company’s users are outside the United States, and it must find a way to make money from those global users. Right now, only 25 percent of its revenue comes from overseas. In the second quarter of the year, each American user represented about $2.17 in ad revenue to Twitter. Each one outside the United States brought in about 30 cents during the quarter.

Twitter’s big challenge is to convince a company outside of the United States why it should spend advertising money with Twitter, and not with other outlets, said Daniel Knapp, director of advertising research at the consultant IHS Screen Digest in London.

Twitter also has limitations as a medium, compared with more visually robust services like Facebook or Google, which can also count on revenue from video and display ads. And the competition isn’t standing still — Instagram, a fast-growing photo sharing service owned by Facebook, announced on Thursday that it would begin putting ads in the photo feeds of its users, something that advertisers have been eagerly awaiting.

Although Twitter has struck deals with television networks in the United States and some other countries to run video clips that are sponsored by advertisers, those are still a small proportion of revenue compared with its sponsored tweets.

The company’s robust presence on mobile devices — 75 percent of its users access the service that way, and two-thirds of revenue is from mobile ads — can also be a limitation where smartphones are not common.

In India, for example, Twitter is widely used by Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, who has 6.5 million followers on the service.

The service has also become one of the most important platforms for political debate there.

But Twitter said in its filing that many users in India and other developing countries get access to the service through basic cellphones, rather than through smartphones or the Web, limiting its ability to deliver compelling ads to users there.

One area that Twitter did not discuss in its filing was electronic commerce, but the company clearly has grand plans there.

In August, it hired Nathan Hubbard, a former chief executive of Ticketmaster, to be its head of commerce. His job is to help Twitter find ways to make it easy for users to buy products directly on the services.

Brian Blau, a research director at Gartner who studies consumer technologies, said, “I firmly believe that Twitter could do well with an e-commerce product.”

From the beginning, companies have used the service to reach out to their customers and engage in conversations with them, he said, and many companies already offer promotions on Twitter. “It seems to be a small leap from ‘click here for a deal’ to ‘click to buy now,’ ” he said.

American Express has been leading the way in experimenting with direct sales on Twitter for its credit and charge card holders. After customers synchronize their cards to their Twitter accounts, they can buy products by sending a Twitter message, or tweet, with a special hashtag in it.

During Fashion Week in New York last month, for example, American Express users could send a tweet with the hashtag #BuyRMinkoffBag to buy a Rebecca Minkoff designer handbag for $95.

The card company offered 150 bags, which sold out in a couple of days. “It deepens what the tweet can bring,” said Leslie Berland, senior vice president of digital partnerships at American Express. “We have a fantastic relationship with Twitter.”

Although Twitter gets no direct revenue from such deals, American Express and other companies making similar offers typically buy sponsored tweets to promote them.

Susan Etlinger, an analyst at the Altimeter Group, said that Twitter users were already accustomed to links and might be receptive to more direct product pitches. But compared to other services, the potential is limited.

“There’s not a lot of context in Twitter because of the newsfeed format and the 140-character limit, so you can’t use e-commerce on it in the same way that you could on a Facebook or a Pinterest,” she said.

Desperate measures: Chidu-Rajan’s demand booster dose is hardly enough

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Or so it would seem, from the government’s latest move on providing a selective stimulus to generate greater demand for some sectors. The government hopes that the selective stimulus program would help spur capacity, generate greater employment and production and eventually push the sputtering growth rate.

Predictably, some sections of industry and some analysts have welcomed the government’s move which is going to be undertaken by pumping in higher capital to public sector banks – greater than the budgeted Rs 14,000 crore – and getting them to lend to the select sectors at lower interest rates. The sectors TVs, refrigerators, motorcycles and scooters. With elections round the corner, the government is trying to push growth and spur demand by way of selective stimulus. But these are wrong signals. Reuters The keenness of the government to intervene in the banking system is fraught with risks, and is bad economics.

Finance minister Palaniappan Chidambaram has said he would now meet PSB heads to impress upon them the need to give cheaper loans to these select sectors. The decision to push through this stimulus came after a meeting the Finance Minister had with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan. The selective stimulus program, coming just before the festive season, rides on the expectation that the lower rates would prompt greater demand and lead to a growth momentum.

But coming as it does with elections in five states around the corner, the move is also bound to be viewed as political and populist in many circles. But more than that, there is little guarantee, given that there are no real details of the scheme available yet, what the efficacy of this booster dose will be. The most important flaw is that it surely can’t be the government’s business to get into forcing banks to lower interest rates. While some economists feel that the scheme would work, others are not so sure.

Indranil Pan, chief economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank, for instance, feels this move can only lead to price distortions. “Any move like this is bound to lead to distortions in pricing,” says Pan, adding that unless demand contracts, it would be tough to correct the current account deficit and that would impact the currency and eventually inflation. More importantly, whether the move will actually generate greater demand, for instance, for two-wheelers is debatable. Sales of automobiles and two-wheelers depends on present and future income generation.

Oil prices are also another major factor, and the interest rate can only be an enabler. It can hardly be the driver of such demand, feels Pan. Pravin Shah, CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra’s automotive division, feels the government’s move can at best be a ‘feel good factor’ in the festive season, and may help the fence sitters take a call on buying two-wheelers. “In these difficult times, any sop is welcome. It is a good move, but more a feel-good factor,” says Shah.

Industry sources are of the view that when a buyer takes the decision to go for a two-wheeler and goes for a 36 to 48-month equated monthly installments (EMI) scheme, banks lowering or not increasing rates will have little impact particularly when RBI has raised repo rates and manufacturers have hiked their selling prices higher than the increase in costs. The best case scenario is the move would be a sentiment booster for the festive season, but its sustainability as a move to push growth is in serious doubt. Adds Pan: “Timing wise, this move is perfect. But the issue is whether it will be sustainable beyond Diwali.” There are no clear answers to that question.

Analysts also point out that the move is also aimed at generating brownie points, at a time when growth is falling and inflation is on the rise. For any government cornered by these factors, this move is an act of desperation to bring some semblance of feel-good back. The consumption scenario has clearly been a problem, and the government’s desperate attempt to boost demand comes in that context. Says a CRISIL report: “Over the past few quarters, consumer spending has declined significantly – growth of private household consumption expenditure dipped to a five-year low of 1.6 percent in Q1FY14.

Persistently weak economic activity, as indicated by weak IIP data, and high inflation are responsible for the moderation in consumer demand. As per CRISIL Research, the decline in spending is more severe in urban than in rural India. Going ahead, we expect rural consumption to improve following good monsoons coupled with government spending in social benefit programs; urban spending is expected to remain weak.”

With the selective stimulus, Chidambaram will be hoping to turn the tide. But what is bound to send confusing signals is that the RBI, which only recently raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to send a signal that it was keen to fight inflation, has joined hands with the government to push the selective stimulus scheme. Only the details of the scheme and the level of additional capitalization for banks will determine how this latest move plays out. The next few weeks will prove whether the stimulus indeed has legs.

Washington - Man seen on fire on National Mall is in critical condition

Law enforcement and medical personnel rushed to Washington's National Mall on Friday afternoon to assist a man who reportedly set himself on fire.

The man was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, said Maj. Patrick Smith with U.S. Park Police.

Officers rushed to scene after receiving a 911 call and found the man engulfed in flames, according to Smith.

Office Hugh Carew, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department, said police will investigate whether the injured man intentionally set himself on fire.

Adam Stifel saw part of the incident while he was jogging.

"I saw a man sitting in flames," Stifel told CNN. "He had already doused himself in gasoline, I believe."

Stifel said five or six people used their shirts to pat out the fire. He said he saw a red gasoline canister near the man.

The incident occurred near the National Air and Space Museum. The man was airlifted out to receive medical care.

No information was available on the man's identity or whether he was part of a protest group.

The location where the man was found on fire is about six blocks from the U.S. Capitol, where a high speed car chase on Thursday ended with a woman being shot and killed by law enforcement officers.

Kerry asks Congress to end shutdown

US Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday urged Congress to end the partial government shutdown and think “long and hard” about the message US sends the world when “we can't get our own act together.”

Kerry is in Bali for an economic summit of Asian leaders. President Barack Obama had planned to attend, but canceled his travel plans to remain in Washington and deal with the shutdown, now into its fifth day. Kerry is now heading the U.S. delegation in the talks.

Kerry said that America's “friends and foes” around the world shouldn't mistake the government shutdown as anything other than a “moment of politics.”

“When we get this moment of political silliness behind us we will get back on a track the world will respect and want to be part of,” he said at a news conference.

He called on recalcitrant lawmakers to “end it now, end it today.”

Kerry vowed that the United States would continue to fulfill its responsibilities during the partial shutdown that has crippled large parts of the federal government and locked thousands of govern employees out of their offices.

“To all of our friends and foes around the world: Do not mistake this momentary episode in American politics for anything less than a moment of politics or anything more than a moment of politics,” Kerry said.

But he did note that security assistance to critical allies like Israel may be affected and that the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which oversees sanctions on rogue countries like Iran, had been forced to furlough nearly all of its staff.

He stressed that he believed the shutdown would not be long term.

Kerry rejected the notion that the shutdown and Obama's cancellation of his summit trip was a sign of “weakness.”

“I don't believe that anyone believes that this is a moment of weakness,” Kerry said. “There isn't one leader here who wouldn't make the same decision if they had to the deal with a domestic challenge.”
