At least 21 people were killed on early Saturday when a canter goods vehicle in which they were travelling toppled at a cross on the state highway, police said.
"The accident took place around 5.30am when the goods vehicle overturned after its driver lost control and hit a roadside kerb at Halki cross while going to Savadatti in Maharashtra from Yadgir district," Police Inspector SD Gudnavar said.
Halki is about 30km from Belgaum, while Savadatti is situated on Karnataka-Maharashtra border.
There were 35 people, including women and children, on the ill-fated vehicle, out of which 14 were injured and were taken to a state-run hospital at Murgod, 5km from the accident spot.
"The passengers were mostly labourers going to Savadatti for work on daily wages from Surupur in Yadgir," Gudnavar said.
Yadgir is about 490km from Bangalore in Karnataka's northeast region.
