Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde will have to fight it out to become the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president. And his foe is none other than NCP boss Sharad Pawar.
On Wednesday, the former ICC, BCCI and MCA chief filed his nomination for the post.
Two parties the Bal Mahaddalkar group and Vijay Patil’s panel proposed and nominated the Union agricultural minister’s name for the coveted position. It was almost like a race that which group would submit the application first and claim to be a Pawar supporter.
“We don’t know who were the other parties that nominated Pawar’s name, but we were the first ones,” said a member of Mahaddalkar panel.
MCA joint secretary PV Shetty of Mahaddalkar panel proposed Pawar’s name which was seconded by president Ravi Sawant.
Meanwhile, the incumbent managing committee member Nadeem Memon, who was a seconder for Pawar’s nomination from the Patil group, said they will back Pawar.
A contestant, who did not wished to be named, said that Pawar does not belong to one group.
“We consider him independent and no group can claim he belongs to them since his nomination was proposed and seconded by both the groups,” said the source.
Shelar withdraws
Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar, who wanted to contest for the vice president’s post from the Mahaddalkar group, has decided against it because he is now backing Munde. “I am not going to contest because of this. However, I will be the part of the Mahaddalkar group in future. I am grateful to Ravi Savant and the group,” he told dna. “And because I proposed Mr Munde’s name, it would have been unfair on my part to represent the group. However, I will be backing all the others from the Mahaddalkar group.”
Meanwhile, the Patil group, too, filed their nominations on Wednesday. Vijay Patil (vice-president), Lalchand Rajput, Abey Kuruvilla, Unmesh Khanvilkar and Atul Ranade (all joint secretary) are the big names from the Cricket First group.
