NCP chief Pawar likely to contest for the top post in Oct 18 election.

Gopinath Munde
One of Maharashtra’s most famous political rivalries may now spill over to the gentleman’s game with senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde throwing his hat into the ring to head the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). NCP chief and union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, who has headed the BCCI and ICC in the past, is likely to contest for the MCA’s top post in the elections due on October 18.
“I have decided to contest. I don’t know who will fight against me. I will fight regardless of who is my opponent,” Munde, who represents Beed in the Lok Sabha told dna, adding that he was “fighting to win”.
Apart from the support of loyalists of former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who headed the MCA, Munde is banking on around 90 votes from clubs affiliated to the Sena-BJP out of the 329 clubs which make the electoral college.
Among the voters in the election are chief minister Prithviraj Chavan – whose rivalry with Pawar was underlined after the latter’s outburst against his pace of decision-making, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, his son and Yuva Sena chief Aaditya, Uddhav’s controversial personal assistant Milind Narvekar, industries minister Narayan Rane, MNS MLA Nitin Sardesai and standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale.
Munde, who has a history of acrimony with the Pawars — he threatened to ensure that Pawar’s nephew and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar was jailed if the Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI alliance came to power — became an MCA voter only last month in his first foray in sports politics. Chavan too had registered as a voter last month, representing the Mazgaon cricket club.
Munde on Tuesday skipped most of his party’s core committee meeting with BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior leaders to fill the nomination for the president’s post, representing the Stylo cricket club. His nomination was supported by BJP MLC and Mumbai chief Ashish Shelar (Rajasthan sports club) and Shiv Sena MLA Subhash Desai (Prabhodan Krida Bhawan).
“Mumbai is the Mecca of cricket,” Munde said, adding that, if elected, he would provide infrastructure to clubs to ensure that children practising there could become good cricketers and ensure that part of the MCA’s income was devolved to these clubs to ensure they had “financial stability”.
