Four police officials and a truck driver were killed after militants attacked a police station at Hiranagar, about 50km from Jammu city, in Kathua district early Thursday morning.
An encounter is underway with at least three terrorists at an army camp in Samba district.
Police said the three terrorists infiltrated the international border in Kathua district. After reaching the national highway, they stopped a truck and asked the driver to take them to either an army camp or CPRF camp nearby.
However, finding neither camp nearby, the militants moved towards Hiranagar police station.
The terrorists first shot dead the truck driver. Around 6.45am, they opened fire indiscriminately inside the police station.
"Four police officials, including one assistant sub-inspector, died on the spot," said a police officer.
The terrorists then left for the adjoining Samba district in the same truck. They were stopped near an army camp at a joint naka by the army and police.
The militants jumped off from the truck and are reportedly hiding in the nearby jungle. The encounter with the terrorists is in progress, police said.
The terror attack comes three days ahead of a scheduled meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in New York on the sidelines of the UN general assembly meet.
