A day after Manmohan Singh called upon the secular forces of the country to unite against Narendra Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate termed the prime minister’s idea of secularism outdated.
Referring to the prime minister’s speech on board his special aircraft, Modi said, “These are dialogues of the 1980s. This is the 21st century. Today, people need development...they need to build their future.”
Modi said that according to him secularism means nation first.
“Secularism means justice for all, appeasement of none. Poverty has no religion, the poor remains poor whether he goes to temple or mosque. There should be no vote bank politics in the name of religion. Some people use religion as a tool to mislead people,” Modi said, addressing thousands of college students at a youth event organised by an NGO at a sports stadium in the national capital.
About 18,000 students from 700 colleges, including IITs and IIMs, participated in the day-long event organised by the NGO, Citizens for Accountable Government.
Modi who spoke to the youth for an hour said that despite his Hindutva image he prefers constructing toilet to temples. “It pains me that even after six decades of Independence, our mothers and sisters are forced to go in open to relieve themselves. First toilet, then devalaya (temple),” he added.
Mocking at the government for its failure to take decisions, he said everyone asks him whether general elections will be held early.
He said, “But again, it’s the government that has to take a decision on it.”
He said, “The Government’s only religion should be nation first, the constitution should be its religious book and the 125 crore people, its power.”
On the issue of stopping people with criminal record from contesting elections, he said there is no need to fear because the Supreme Court has taken care of it. He then termed the government’s decision to bring in an ordinance to protect convicted lawmakers a mistake. “First they commit the mistake of bringing an ordinance and then take it back. In all these exercise, the prime minister is humiliated,” Modi said.
